20 yr 3-Tab Shingles

A shingle that shows 3 tabs, or measures 3 feet, is fittingly known as 3-Tab Roofing Shingles. They are normally guaranteed for 20 years and help the roof to have a smooth, defined look. Depending on the manufacturer, 3-tab shingles are often available in 20, 25 or even 30 year limited warranties. They are generally available in a variety of colors and it’s also important to note that 3-tab roofing shingles are some of the most cost efficient shingles to use on your home.

Are 3-Tab Roofing Shingles For You?

Before deciding on 3-tab roofing shingles for your home, check with your local homeowners association. In addition to certain restrictions that each association may have, some do not allow the use of 3-tab shingles. This may be true in areas that are prone to high wind or other inclement weather, but check with your local building requirements to be sure.

3 Tab Shingles vs Architectural Shingles

The two most common shingles offered in residential roofing are 3-Tab shingles and Architectural or Dimensional shingles.  Most homes in the Colorado area that are older than 10 years old are roofed with the traditional 3-Tab shingle, however Architectural shingles are quickly rising in popularity and are not the number one shingle style used on most Colorado homes.

Replacing 3-Tab Roofing Shingles

If you need to replace 3-tab roofing shingles, you can either do the job yourself or hire a professional roofing contractor, such as Legacy Roofing. If you decide to take the job on yourself, choose a warm, dry day. Do not work on the roof if it is wet or slippery. Once you’re on the roof, carefully pry the tabs of the shingles upward, which overlap the damaged one. Loosen the tabs and the adhesive on the back of the shingle. Work carefully to avoid damage to the neighboring shingles. If you lift too many tabs on good shingles, they may crack. For the shingle that you are removing, look for the nails holding it into place and remove them as well. Once the shingle is out, remove any debris from that area before placing the new shingle. With your new shingle in hand, search for the adhesive strips near the bottom of each of the 3 tabs. Slide the new shingle into place and secure it with nails. You may use roofing cement to secure the overlaying tabs.

High Impact Resistance Shingles and Hail Damage

Asphalt shingles may suffer a wide variety of damage types. Several common ones are severe granule loss, material loss at shingle edges, and penetration. Wind can also create serious roof damage. For example, it is documented that roof material failure was the most widespread type of damage from the Southlands Tornado in Aurora, Co.

That’s why Legacy uses high-impact-resistant shingles for every project we can. Several manufacturers offer asphalt shingles designed to resist the effects of severe weather such as wind and impact from flying debris or hail. These new shingle products are designed to resist damage from impact and high winds. Numerous different proprietary methods are used to improve damage resistance. Including methods used to keep granules attached to the shingle, to prevent shingle breaking during impact, and to keep shingles attached to the sheathing during high winds. High-impact-resistant shingles are likely the best choice for your home or business.

High-impact-resistance shingles meet the most stringent standards for impact resistance set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). UL 2218 classifies the resistance of roofing products to impact damage. Products that receive a Class 4 rating from UL 2218 are the most resistant to hail damage. They are tested by directing steel balls at roof samples, and damage is observed. Having Class 4 shingles on your roof can often result in Discounts on Insurance Premiums. Some major insurance companies are offering homeowner premium discounts for the use of roofing products that receive a Class 4 rating.
